Melamine Kitchens

Melamine is particleboard, laminated with a decorative thermally fused paper/resin coating under heat and pressure. This is done within a very short time, 14-20 seconds and is very critical as the resin has to pass from the paper to the board, before it cures. This provides a durable, scratch, moisture and discoloration resistant surface. Melamine is suitable for medium-duty vertical and horizontal applications, such as door and drawer frontals, carcasses, furniture components and shelving, as well as interior wall cladding and building elements. Since there is such a wide variety of colours and textures available for melamine boards, the product can be used to make any kind of furniture e.g. bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and other furniture.

Melamine boards can be finished looking like authentic wood and are available in a variety of colours and textures. Unlike solid wood that can vary in grain patterns and colour, even within the same order, melamine offers a consistent finish since it is manufactured in a controlled setting, it offers a very high scratch and stain resistant surface. (please note this applies to A-Grade materials only)

Wrap Laminated Kitchens

When considering a new kitchen design, vinyl wrap is a surface finish that is sometimes requested for cupboard doors. Like all surface finishes, it has some distinct benefits as well as some potential areas of concern. It is useful to understand what a “vinyl wrap” door is in order to understand these features, and thus make an informed choice for your kitchen.

They vinyl product itself is essentially a thin, flexible plastic that is mouldable when heated. Vinyl wrap or thermo-formed doors are created by wrapping a MDF door substrate (moisture resistant board) with a vinyl coating using a vacuum, glue and heat process. The vinyl is wrapped across the front of the door, and around all edges in one continuous piece. The back of the door is usually melamine.

Vinyl wrap comes in a variety of colours and finishes chosen by the supplier. Colours are kept up-to-date with the current trends. The sheen level can be matt, gloss, texture, or printed. Semi-gloss is not available from most suppliers. Vinyl wrap can be used on a flat door, or on a profile door, making it quite versatile. Each supplier offers their own range of profiles as not all profiles can be accommodated by the vinyl wrapping process. The durability of vinyl wrap is very good.

Duco Kitchens

Duco allows you to create a unique kitchen design, with a clean and smooth finish. Available in many colour options, Duco is a popular product on the local and international design scene.

Duco is a term widely used for applying a quick-drying multi-colour line of nitrocellulose lacquers made especially for the automotive & carpentry industry. In short – we make use of a medium density fiberboard (Mdf) / supawood, and apply primer coat by spray gun, whereafter the base and final coats get applied.

All spray painting gets done in a controlled spray booth area ensuring a clean and smooth finished product.

Veneered Kitchens

When doing a kitchen, one of the important things that need to be considered is the finish, not the colour, but the type of material. Al though there are more types of materials, two types of the most well-know and commonly used is melamine and wood veneer.

Melamine is a synthetic (man-made) board used extensively by carpenters to make products used in kitchens and other furniture items in South Africa. This is a product that results when a thin paper is pressed at a high pressure on raw board such as chipboard or MDF. Although there are a large variety of colour or woodgrain options in South Africa, ultimately the choses are dependent on what the suppliers have to offer. These finishes can be described as a picture taken of the wood grain and placed on to the melamine sheet. Thus, what you see is what you get; it cannot be stained nor painted. Since this finish has its limits. Nonetheless, if there’s a finish in the wide variety that you that you love, it’s the perfect option for a tight budget.

When taking a look at wood veneer in comparison to melamine, the wood veneer is a very thin piece of wood that is shaved, layered and applied to plywood or particle board. Wood veneer can be made from the wood of various species of trees such as mahogany, walnut, cherry, oak, maple and beech, as well as rare and exotic species such as Brazilian rosewood and eucalyptus (there are hundreds of different types of wood veneer available). Unlike melamine, wood veneer can be sanded along the grain, painted, varnished, stained as well as curved or bended to give the cabinets the illusion that is made entirely from solid wood without breaking the bank.
